When Cao Cao fought against the Yellow Turban bandits, he claimed victory
in each battle. One time, as he was chasing several hundred of the bandits,
he noticed that an unknown man had trapped them all. Dian Wei went forward
to interrogate the man, and asked him to return the bandits to them, to be
dealt with. The man said some awful things to Dian Wei before telling him
that he wouldn't let the bandits go unless he was defeated. Angered, Dian Wei
fought the man. However, even after two days of fighting there was no victor,
so Cao Cao used his tricks to capture the man.
When asked his name, the man replied that it was Xu Chu. Originally, he had
led the villagers in the area in the fight against the bandits for several
months. When he saw them retreat, he set up a trap and captured them all in
it. Cao Cao liked the man's bravery and strength, so he invited him to
join his ranks, promoting him to captain. Cao Cao's choice was a wise one,
for Xu Chu accomplished much during his time of service.
While Ma Chao was trying to avenge his father, he led his army into Luoyang,
even forcing Cao Cao to change his appearance in order to escape death. Luckily,
the weather changed, becoming cool at night. Cao Cao used this opportunity to
erect hardened dirt walls to confront Ma Chao. On the second day, Ma Chao noticed
the walls and was surprised. As he went to examine them, he could see from afar
a mean-faced man who was standing behind Cao Cao. Checking with his scouts,
he learned that the man was the famed Tiger Fool Xu Chu, and because of
this decided not to advance his army.
The next day, Xu Chu disregarded Cao Cao who had been holding him back, and
dueled with Ma Chao without wearing his armor. Even after a day of fierce
fighting, the battle was a stalemate. Cao Cao, watching from afar, feared
the result of the battle between the two skilled fighters would be a loss for
his side. When Xu Chu got careless and was injured, Cao Cao ordered his men
to escort Xu Chu back. Seeing this, Ma Chao's side also sent forth an escort.
Suddenly, the two man duel became an all-out war. Amidst the chaos, Xu Chu was
injured by two arrows because he wasn't wearing any armor. Luckily, the soldiers
were still able to escort him back behind the dirt walls.
After Dian Wei's death, Xu Chu became the captain of Cao Cao's personal
guards. Both men had been perfect candidates for the position. If it wasn't
for them doing their absolute best all times, who knows if Cao Cao would
have been able to avoid all the crises he encountered.
