In the past, Cao Cao had once failed to assassinate Dong Zhuo, so he returned
home to regather his troops to try again. At this time, a pair of brothers from
the same family tribe came and joined him. They were named Xiahou Dun and
Xiahou Yuan, and were actually true relatives of Cao Cao. Cao Cao's father
was originally a man named Xiahou, who became an adopted son to an official
named Cao Teng. Because of this, both his name and Cao Cao's surname was
changed to Cao. In other words, Cao Cao's true surname was actually Xiahou.
When Cao Cao was in a stalemate with Lü Bu, Xiahou Dun commanded his
troops to war. While they were traveling, they met with a surprised battle
with Lü Bu's frontline general, Gao Shun. Xiahou Dun fought Gao Shun in
a duel, and Gao Shun was no match for him. When Gao Shun ran from the fight,
Xiahou Dun chased after him. When Lü Bu's army witnessed this, they fired
arrows to help Gao Shun escape. One arrow, apparently, made its mark in
Xiahou Dun's left eye. After a painful scream, he quickly plucked out the
arrow, but his eyeball came out along with it. Fighting the immense pain, he
shouted, Essence of my father, blood of my mother, I cannot throw this away!,
before putting the eyeball in his mouth and swallowing it. Losing an eye did
not affect Xiahou Dun's fighting ability. Instead, it made him even better
than before.
The Xiahou brothers were both formidable generals in numerous battles. Not
only did they fight in the front lines, but they were also very loyal. However,
both of them had more muscles than brains. When alone, they would often get
careless at some point and lose the battle. Even though Cao Cao had a group
full of powerful generals at his aid, he lacked generals that were both brave
and intelligent. Maybe it was because of Cao Cao's own intelligence that the
lack of brains among his subordinates did not undo him!
