Generally, Chao Yun is very highly regarded among the five generals serving
Liu Pei. This is not only because he once endured a fierce battle to save the
life of Liu Pei's baby son, but also because he was the only general who had
both strength and wisdom. In every one of the battles he took part in, his
performance was outstanding: from Liu Pei's exile, to the great battle at Ch'ih Pi,
from the capturing of the Ching province to entering Hsi Ch'uan, from conquering the
southern barbarians until Chuge Lieng waged the northern wars.
After Tsau Tsau defeated Yuan Shao and united the north, he decided to bring
with him an army of 500,000 to crush Liu Pei. At this time, Liu Pei's army was
only 3,000 strong. Knowing he could not win against Tsau Tsau's army, Liu Pei decided
to escape. However, Tsau Tsau's army caught up with him in the Ch'ang Pan hills.
During the battle that ensued, Liu Pei's wife and baby son were lost in all
the chaos, so Chao Yun went off alone to find them. After great difficulty,
he saved Liu Pei's son and returned him to his father's side. Leaving the
enemy grounds, his whole body, from head to toe, was soaked in the blood of
his enemies. With the courage to ignore an army of 500,000 to retrieve but
one, coming and going through the ravages of battle as he pleased, he was
truly an extraordinary warrior and thinker.
After Liu Pei, Guan Yu and Jang Fei passed away, Chao Yun became the chief
general in Chuge Lieng's plans for waging war to the north and south. It was
therefore unfortunate for Chuge Lieng when Chao Yun passed away from a disease
just as his attack to the north was about to begin.
The second king, Liu T'an, raised Chao Yun's rank to Great General, and built
temples to remember him. Offerings were brought to the temple yearround.
